Description

Furch Gc-LI a

Grand Auditorium cutaway · Alpine spruce / Malaysian blackwood

The Furch Gc-LI a is a Grand Auditorium cutaway built around individually voiced AAA Alpine spruce and solid Malaysian blackwood. Furch pairs those with their scalloped X-bracing and Full-Pore High-Gloss finish so the top stays lively: clear, open highs, a warm and complex low end, and the kind of midrange that stays present whether you fingerpick or drive it with a flatpick.

The body is Furch’s G (Grand Auditorium) shape with a 14th-fret neck joint and cutaway. Bevel Duo comfort cuts sit on the treble-side upper bout and the back, which takes the edge off long sessions without changing the silhouette much. Scale is 650 mm (25 9/16"). Standard nut is 45 mm (1 3/4"). Neck is African mahogany with Furch’s Soft V profile, CNR System Active carbon-reinforced joint (dual-action rod plus a dedicated action-adjustment screw), figured ziricote fingerboard and bridge, 15 3/4" radius, TUSQ nut and fully compensated saddle. Gotoh 510 tuners (1:21) with ebony buttons. Binding and contrast lines are Hawaiian koa; purfling and rosette use abalone. Hiscox-style hard case is included.

Malaysian Blackwood

Malaysian blackwood is sold as Diospyros ebonasea. It is a true ebony-family hardwood from Malaysia, not an acacia like Tasmanian blackwood and not a rosewood (Dalbergia) like Brazilian or Indian rosewood. Density is very high—roughly 1,050–1,155 kg/m³, Janka around 3,180 lbf—so it is closer to Macassar or Gaboon ebony than to rosewood in weight and hardness.

Tonally, builders use it as a rosewood alternative that does not scoop the mids the way many rosewoods do. Expect a dense, ringing low end, clear rather than glassy highs, strong sustain, and a midrange that stays full. Compared with Indian rosewood it is usually tighter and more focused; compared with ebony it has more warmth and color in the mids. Furch’s own description of the LI pairing is “clear, open highs with a warm, complex low end,” which matches how most players talk about Alpine spruce over this wood.

It is scarce and priced like premium ebony or high-grade rosewood. Furch grades the back-and-side sets AAA and voices the back the same way they voice the top, which is why this pairing shows up on Red and limited Yellow Deluxe models rather than as a generic catalog wood.
